Michael Lam
Senior Financial Education Specialist
Building practical financial habits for Hong Kong families since 2012
Who We’re Working With
Michael’s been helping Hong Kong families get their finances in order for over a decade. He started in banking—working directly with customers at a major local institution—and realized pretty quickly that most people weren’t struggling because they didn’t care about money. They were struggling because nobody’d taught them how to manage it properly. That gap between available products and actual understanding is what drove him to education.
Now at FinanceFlow Hong Kong Limited, he’s written over 150 articles specifically about the challenges Hong Kong families face: building emergency funds on local salaries, understanding Octopus card spending patterns, navigating the maze of local bank accounts, and planning finances as a household. He’s worked with more than 8,000 families directly through workshops and written content. The thing is, Michael doesn’t write abstract financial theory. He writes about real problems he’s seen in real neighborhoods across Kowloon, Central, and the New Territories.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of Hong Kong and completed CFA Level II certification. But what matters more is that he’s spent the last eight years understanding exactly how Hong Kong’s unique financial ecosystem works—and how regular earners can thrive within it.

What Michael Focuses On
Emergency Funds & Cash Reserves
Michael’s primary focus is helping Hong Kong families build and maintain emergency reserves that actually work for their situation. Not generic advice—specific strategies for local salaries, Hong Kong cost of living, and the reality of family expenses in the SAR. He’s helped families go from zero savings to three months of expenses in reserve. His approach starts with understanding your actual spending (which is why Octopus card awareness matters so much), then building realistic targets based on what you actually earn.
Octopus Card Spending Awareness
One of Michael’s unique specializations. Most Hong Kong residents use Octopus daily but don’t track where the money goes. He’s developed practical frameworks for understanding your Octopus spending patterns, identifying leaks, and making intentional decisions. This feeds directly into emergency fund building—you can’t save if you don’t know where money’s going. He’s written extensively about extracting data, analyzing patterns, and using that awareness to reshape habits without feeling restrictive.
Local Bank Account Comparison
Hong Kong has dozens of bank accounts designed for different needs. Michael cuts through the complexity by comparing accounts based on what actually matters: interest rates for savings, accessibility, ATM networks, and fee structures. He doesn’t just list features—he helps families understand which account fits their situation. Whether you’re a salaried worker, freelancer, or household managing shared finances, he’s mapped out the realistic choices and trade-offs specific to Hong Kong’s banking landscape.
Family Financial Planning
Money gets complicated when multiple people are involved. Michael specializes in helping households align on financial goals, communicate about spending, and plan together for emergencies. He works with couples, multi-generational families, and shared-income households to create plans that actually stick. His approach emphasizes transparency, realistic goal-setting, and building financial habits that work for everyone in the household, not just one person.
